Book design and production for four main audiences

Are your in-house designers overwhelmed? Freelancers not up to speed? I’ve worked with a wide variety of publishers and have no problem keeping track of each one’s procedures and house style. I specialize in designing and producing text-heavy interiors. I also truly enjoy the challenge of typesetting and layout from other designers’ samples. An Adobe Certified Expert in InDesign, I take full advantage of the tools available for fast, accurate, and high-quality typesetting and layout. I also have years of experience producing well-crafted ebooks.

“Tina Henderson is an excellent book designer and typesetter. I’ve hired her to work on complicated titles with very short schedules, and her precision and accuracy is dead-on. She is adept, creative in tackling all problems, and extremely knowledgeable in all design and typesetting programs. Most of all, Tina is unflappable. I couldn’t recommend her services more highly.”

—Rebecca Holland, Random House

Could your publications staff and freelance designers use some relief from the sometimes mundane tasks of typesetting and entering corrections? These are two areas where I excel. I have 20 years of experience typesetting art books, exhibition catalogues, and now catalogues raisonnés. Some of my first freelance work was done for the highly skilled art book designers at Harry N. Abrams in the early 90s. I understand and appreciate the high quality of typesetting that is expected in an art book. I can provide typeset galleys or pages, based on designers’ samples, and corrected layouts throughout the publication process.

“Tina has been an essential freelance part of the Metropolitan Museum’s publishing program for several years. I cannot count how many projects have made their publication date due to her quality work, always on time, always accurate, always professional. She can take a difficult assignment and make it simple—what more can I say? I cannot recommend her highly enough.”

—Robert Weisberg, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Do you ever feel pressured to do typesetting, layout, and corrections in a huge rush? I work closely with in-house designers and design studios, assisting with design and production tasks. I can produce galleys or pages from your sample files, with no need for a comp order. I’m happy to set up master pages and style sheets to make further changes easy to implement. My speed and accuracy with corrections is well-known among my clients.

“Tina is such a pleasure to work with! She is always perfectly accurate, on time, fast, and her typesetting is truly beautiful. She uses style sheets better than anyone I’ve ever seen and she knows all the editorial workflow and conventions for many kinds of publishing. She also is a skilled designer and can work with images and art layouts with great expertise. She is a fantastic asset to every project we have worked on together.”

You’ve worked tirelessly to perfect the content of your book. Shouldn’t the design and production be given equal care? With the recent proliferation of self-published books and ebooks, yours needs to stand out. I can ensure that your book looks polished and professional. I can also provide guidance through the self-publishing process. In addition to print design and production, I’m pleased to offer ebook design and production in the two major formats: epub (iPad, Nook, Sony eReader) and mobi (Kindle).

“Tina takes my handwritten poems and Gary’s photographs and pulls them together into beautiful books. She does everything: typing, editing, proofing, getting the ISBNs, and ordering the printing. I am very appreciative.”

—Nobie Makar, self-published author of three books
